#’s are taking over the world!
The # sign may just be the unused dial on your phone but it’s a phenomenon that has blown to tremendous proportions in the social media world of 2013. The # symbol or hashtag is used to mark keywords or topics within a tweet. (That’s a post on Twitter!) You’ll also see hashtags used on Instagram and Vine, with Facebook jumping in this year.
What’s the big deal, you may ask? Hashtag users are able to create categories and organize their messages by simply adding a # to beginning of their keyword(s). These are great ways to connect with others on events, emergencies and breaking news. Chatter over television shows and trending topics are other examples of how the social media masses are engaging with the powerful hashtag.
Using the hashtag is very simple. In the applicable social media forum simply add a hashtag before your keyword(s) when you post. Be sure that there are no spaces in the keywords attached to the hashtag or any punctuations so you do not break the link. That’s it! The result is connection with those sharing your interest.
Be sure to keep your hashtags relevant. Some post many hashtags throughout their posts because they want to reach more followers. It’s a major turnoff and gives an appearance to your current followers that you are spamming them or at the very least being obnoxious. Many have started the bad habit of breaking up entire posts with hashtags throughout. Don’t lose the flow of your message with random hashtags dividing your thoughts into pieces. We’d suggest one or two hashtags in a post tops! Check out this hilarious spoof with late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon and singer/actor Justin Timberlake. It’s a great reminder to use the tool reasonably. #GoodLuck
